Sound: Far less mellow and atmospheric than 2004’s Conductor. Spells shows The Comas embracing psychedelic pop/rock with fuzzy riffs, swirling organs and catchy male/female harmonies. They also slow it down with some shimmery, spacey dreamscapes featuring falsetto crooning.
Playlist Partners: Superchunk (their more recent stuff), The New Pornographers, Sparklehorse, The Flaming Lips
Heavy Rotation tracks: “I Am A Spider”; “Sarah T.”; “New Wolf”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Come My Sunshine”; “Red Microphones”
Recommended: With some solid hooks and plenty of rich musical textures, Spells has a lot to offer to fans of snappy but adventurous indie rock.
Grade: B+
