Sound: Metric’s sound has always hearkened back to the mid-‘90s heyday of the female-fronted indie rock band—think Magnapop, Belly, Juliana Hatfiled, Madder Rose, Dirt Merchants—with its crunchy guitar riffs, angelic vocals and sinister attitude. This time around, they make everything slicker, bigger, dreamier and hookier with electronic touches throughout.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Sick Muse”; “Stadium Love”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Satellite Mind”; “Help I’m Alive”; “Gold Guns Girls”
Recommended: If you’ve always liked Metric’s retro sound, but wished they’d write more memorable singles. The first half of the album is full of hits. Unfortunately, the second five tracks pale in comparison, except for the monstrous closer, “Stadium Love.”
Grade: B (1st half = A-; 2nd half = B-)
